eiffel tower black and white Skinny a La French Five Parisian Tips to Stay in Shape in 2013It’s no secret that the European lifestyle is very different than an American one. One area that Europeans clearly excel in is fitness. Europeans – and the French in particular – have much lower rates of obesity and heart disease than Americans, and they are on average thinner and more fit. What’s their secret?

You can learn a lot from the French about staying skinny, but there isn’t one single magical trick. Parisians are thinner because their entire lifestyle supports their health and weight management. Even if they’re not actively trying to lose weight, their normal diet and routine helps them keep off the pounds. Here are some Parisian tips that can help you stay in shape, too.

Follow a New Eating Pattern

It’s important to keep your metabolism up and running during the day, but you may be unintentionally overeating. It isn’t always necessary to snack in between meals or at set intervals, and the French do not snack very much. They eat three main meals per day, and they typically have a heavier lunch and lighter, earlier dinner. In between meals, they tend to drink a lot of water, which is very healthy and helps them feel full throughout the day.

Eat the Right Meals

The French are very healthy eaters, and what they include – and don’t include – in their diets is a major factor in their fitness. Unlike Americans, the French do not eat a lot of fatty, fried, or processed foods. In general, they eat more fruit and vegetables. Portion control is also extremely important. The French don’t eat huge portions. Their meals are much smaller, and they do not overeat because they cook small portions to begin with.

Drink Alcohol Sparingly

It’s not uncommon for the French to have a glass or two of wine at dinner – even on a daily basis – but they do not overdo it as many Americans tend to. Parisians drink wine only to compliment their meals, and they do not get drunk. Drinking too much can cause you to pack on the pounds, and they also don’t want to risk embarrassing themselves in public.

Walk or Bike Everywhere

Walk Everywhere You Can!

Parisians walk a lot, and they transport themselves on foot much more commonly than Americans do. They don’t shy away from long walks for quick errands. They’re more relaxed, and they prefer to take their time and get exercise by walking. It’s also common for Parisians to ride bicycles. The entire culture supports walking and biking, and in America it’s generally more common to drive or take public transportation, especially outside of urban areas.

Stay Stress-Free

Of course it’s easier said than done, but Parisians maintain much lower levels of stress than Americans do. When you’re stressed out, it’s harder for your body to burn fat, and it can even cause you to gain weight. Parisians have a more easy-going attitude in life. They try not to let little things bother them, and they don’t let their lives revolve around their work.
